Betty asked: I quit smoking 3 months ago. Since then, I’ve rapidly gained over 20 pounds. I started working out right before I quit, thinking that it would help me not gain, but it hasn’t helped at all. I’ve been working out at least 4 days a week for 40 or so minutes since I quit, plus I’ve cut out drinking soda. I haven’t really changed my diet since I quit, but I haven’t been eating any more than I did when I was smoking (I should know, I’ve kept a food diary). I also did a detox for a week and I recently started taking Alli and Acai supplements. I’m drinking tons of water. Why did this happen? It seems when I quit smoking, my metabolism quit too! My body just seems to be all out of whack. I don’t know what else to do, and I don’t want to start smoking again. I don’t want to resort to starving myself or working out 5 hours a day. Who knows if THAT would even help. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me? I’m just stuck and getting very, very frustrated.
As far as my work outs, I do 3-4 miles on the treadmill or 6-9 miles on the elliptical at a brisk pace about 4 days a week. I’ve been doing light weights as well.
